Choral society is setting sail for musical success

Charity fundraiser with a nautical theme

Market Rasen Choral Society was joined by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) last weekend for an evening of music with a nautical theme.

The society performed one of the greatest English choral works of the 20th century, A Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams, with the splendid Lincoln Pro Musica orchestra and soloists Ruth Kerr and Mark Saberton, conducted by their musical director Colin Lesser.

A large and enthusiastic audience also enjoyed Stanford's Songs of the Fleet, settings of poems by Sir Henry Newbolt (1862-1938) a former pupil of Caistor Grammar School.

De Aston Sports Hall was colourfully decked out with RNLI banners and a display of sea paintings produced by pupils at Market Rasen Primary School, working with their teacher Sue Thompson and Margaret Smith who talked about the vital work of the lifeboat charity.

Graham Smith, chairman of the Caistor branch of the RNLI, thanked the choral society for their invitation to be involved in the Sea Symphony Project, generously supported by the BBC charity Choral Ambition.

In total 460 was raised for the RNLI through souvenir sales and a bucket collection.
