Cadets shoot for £10k target

AIR Cadets are always looking for exciting challenges and adventure, but now the cadets of 2292 Squadron (ATC) in Market Rasen are launching their most ambitious project to date – raising £10,000.

Cadets launched a prize draw at the Wickenby Wings and Wheels event at the weekend.

The prizes reflect the support air cadets provide to the wider community, with offers from many of the groups and institutions cadets support each year – including a ‘money can’t buy’ behind the scenes tour of Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, an internal tour of the Lancaster at Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, an RAF Scampton VIP tour, tickets to the 2013 Lincolnshire Show and Waddington Air Show, flying lessons and more.

The money raised will be split between the Help for Heroes charity and the local cadets to provide them with the chance to visit the Menin Gate at Ypres and lay a wreath in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War.

“Three cadets from the squadron were privileged to visit the First World War cemeteries in Belgium earlier this year and were able to parade through the Menin Gate at Ypres and lay a wreath at the memorial there,” said Dave Smith, commanding officer of the 2292 Squadron.

“This has left an understandable impression on those cadets and they have resolved to organise a fundraising prize draw to give the entire squadron the opportunity to repeat the experience.”

In addition to funding this visit, the cadets themselves decided half of any funds raised should be donated to the Help for Heroes charity to support injured veterans of the armed forces.

Tickets for the draw are on sale now, direct from the cadets or at local businesses, including Rasen Farm Shop, Middle Rasen Post Office and Lancasters Butchers.

The winners will be drawn at the dining-in night, the culmination of the squadron’s year, on Friday, November 23.
