Bid to revive the town band

Attempts are being made to get Brigg Town Band blowing again.

North Lincolnshire and Brigg Town Councillor Rob Waltham is promoting the initiative and plans are for a launch dinner in January with 2013 being the target year for real developments.

Brigg Town Band has had an up and down existence over the years, thriving in competitions in the 1980s and being regular performers in the town and over a wider area.

It had folded however by the 1990s, though there was an unsuccessful attempt at a revival eight years ago, following which the band was officially wound up, with the instruments going to Barton Town Band.

“We need to raise £2,500 and plan a dinner at The Buttercross in January,” said Coun Waltham.

“That will be the launch and when we get things moving we will hope to pair with Barton.

“It will be crucial to get the schools involved, young people being in the band will be all important.”

Hopefully, the band can revive and be heard playing at the bandstand in the Market Place, which was put in place ten years ago using money from the Yorkshire Forward initiative.

So far, apart from the splendid Vale Academy Brass Band at the Christmas Fair, the facility has largely been a base for charity stalls and promotions rather than as a bandstand.
