AS is normal at the beginning of July, presidents of Rotary clubs across the world hand over their responsibilities to a new president within their club.

And Market Rasen was no exception, Rotarian Laurie Povey passing over the chain of office to Derek Anderson.

Both from Market Rasen, and both retired primary school head teachers, Laurie and Derek have worked well together over the past years, particularly recently in developing the town’s Garden Show and Open Gardens event – which this year will be held on August 4.

Laurie was presented with a pair of inscribed wine goblets from the club, together with a book of 45 newspaper cuttings, which report on activities within the Rotary Club of Market Rasen, during his year in office.

Derek, who has agreed to steer the club through the next two years, will be supported by Stuart Davies, who will become president in July 2014.

Stuart, from Caistor, has previously served as president and also, for many years, as club secretary.

As well as continuing the many fundraising events, the club is well known for supporting community, international, and environmental projects,

Derek will be the principal host of the Dutch Exchange club in 2013, on the 34th year of exchanges – an activity started by the late ‘Mr Market Rasen’, Rotarian Albert Rhoades.

The carol concert, Lincolnshire dinner, supermarket collections, school environmental projects will also all continue, as will individual sponsorships when considered appropriate.

Rotarians, generally professional and business people from the local community, endeavour to create an environment in which they can enjoy themselves while helping others.

Anyone who would like to find out about joining the Rotary club, or to support them, should contact the club secretary on 01673 838551.
