EDITOR - I have been researching the Topliss family in Lincolnshire for the past 30 years as my great grandmother, Mary Topliss, was born at Langton by Wragby in 1835.
John George Topliss, 1857-1929, was a draper who lived at The Limes, Market Rasen. As I have few 20c details I cannot positively identify L & E Topliss, as detailed in your appeal for information which i found on your website, from my records.

However, I do have a considerable amount of information regarding the Topliss family that may be of interest to your readers.

Most, if not all, Lincolnshire Topliss's, appear to be descended from John Topliss and Mary Cowley who were married at Alfreton, Derbyshire, in 1755. They first moved to Car Colston in Nottinghamshire before moving to Dawood Grange, Woodhall Spa, in the 1780s.

The children of John and Mary had large families which spread throughout north and north west Lincolnshire during the first part of the 19c. Branches settled in Horncastle, High Toynton, Louth, Grimsby, North Kelsey and Binbrook where they were prominent millers, and one, John Topliss, was proprietor of the Marquis of Granby.
My great grandmother's family lived at Briar's Farm, Langton by Wragby. Many family members emigrated in the 19c creating Topliss dynasties in America, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

They seem to be an enterprising business-minded family, having drapery businesses in Louth and running bus services in the North Kelsey area.

John George of Market Rasen was a grandson of Mary Bateman of the brewing family. One branch wasprominent on the railways. Another John, my great grandmother's brother, was station master at Firsby in the 1890s and his family spread throughout eastern England working in railway administration.
