EDITOR - I am saddened that Market Rasen Youth Centre in in such crisis as it has been a part of my life for a long time.
I became a member at the age of 13, and I have fond and happy memories, in particular the staff taking me on an educational trip to the Lake District. We stayed in a youth hostel and took part in many outdoor pursuit activities.
I progressed to vo
luntary work at the centre for three years and then became a member of staff for five years in which time I also worked as a Detached Youth Worker which allowed a colleague and I to work out in the communities with young people who did not access the Youth Centre facility; encouraging and empowering them to access the centre when they felt the need.
I feel this was and still is a valuable piece of community work that touches on the needs of those young people and working in partnership with Market Rasen, A Full Time Base Centre, and Caistor and Keelby which are Part Time Maintained Centres.
I know how important the centre is for all young people and how staff help those young people throughout various times, needs within their lives.
I am once again saddened and angry that there is no management at the centre and the doors appear to be closed for those young people hoping/trying to access the premises.
The centre has recently been refurbished and this in itself seems a waste of money, if no one can access it. I feel the young people have been short-changed not only in Market Rasen but the surrounding towns and villages.
What have our future generations got to look forward to if the doors of the centre are closed? What has happened to one of our most popular places for young people to attend?
Many adults complain about young people who are hanging out on the streets. So this is why I am passionate about keeping this facility open. Surely as a community we can help save this facility?
