The Farm ploughs a deep furrow
Wednesday, 11.30am: REVIEW - A story that is touching, truthful and sadly all too topical is being presented in Caistor this Saturday - and it is one that really should not be missed.
There is something painfully voyeuristic in watching New Perspectives Theatre Company present The Farm, exposing the all-too real life drama experienced by many small farmers.
The play is to be endured and enjoyed in equal measure, touching chords deep within us and welling up tears through the poignant portrayal of a plight that resonates with anyone passionate about the provenance of their food and the state of their countryside.
Ahead of Saturday’s performance at Caistor Town Hall - 7.30pm on May 17 - The Farm was presented last night at the UK’s newest theatre, the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre as part of the Lincoln Book Festival and a major East Midlands tour.
The Farm is an adaptation of Richard Benson’s autobiographical novel telling the painful, funny, uplifting story of how big business is changing the face of the English countryside forever.
Like many small farms in the UK, the farm owned by Benson’s father was hit by plummeting livestock prices caused by supermarket chains and the Common Agricultural Policy.
The story is particularly topical as the pig farming industry in Britain mobilises its campaign for fair prices to halt the slide of farm closures across the country.
With sensitivity, style and not an insignificant supply of sparkle and smiles, The Farm turns a tale of helpless submission as a way of life vanishes into one of hope that sows seeds for the future.
A faultless line up of typically deep and brooding countryman Jai Armstrong, engaging Angie Cape, expressive Maggie Tagney and perfectly poised John Walters is led by a frantic Peter McCamley as narrator Richard Benson tripping out this most humane of human stories.
Tickets for Caistor, £7 and £6 on the door, from 01472 851201 or from Caistor Post Office, with a 50p discount.
