EVERYTHING came up smelling of sweet peas when the Middle Rasen & District Horticultural Society unexpectedly enjoyed a great show of quality blooms for its 40th anniversary Sweet Pea and Early Summer Flower Show.
Organisers had feared the worse from difficult growing consditions. Earlier in the week, the sweet peas had been slow to bloom, but they came out in time for the show, resulting in a superb display.

Open exhibitors came from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire to show off their blooms and to support Middle Rasen for their special anniversary.

Many started their exhibiting careers at Middle Rasen and have now gone on to great things nationally.

Sweet pea judge Andy Hubbuck said the flowers had never looked so good, especially after a wet and windy week.

“It was difficult to prepare the flowers, but it is a superb exhibition. Several newcomers this year showed real quality,” he said.

Middle Rasen’s John Bennett won with his bowl of sweet peas, but many of the winners came from Lincoln and beyond. Lou Ashurst from Newark put on the best exhibit.

Market Rasen Flower Club members Gina Waite and Judy Golland picked up awards in the general flowers section.

The floral art section was well supported and the art work entries, a scene from Middle Rasen, from the children at the village school were delightful.

Andy and Beryl Hubbuck presented the prizes and congratulated the committee on putting on a wonderful show.
