Victim visitation scheme earns pips for police
A NEW practice aimed at improving the service offered to victims of crime in the Brigg area has been welcomed.
In an effort to better support those affected by crime, victims are being routinely offered a visit from a member of their neighbourhood police team and more than two-thirds of victims have been taking up the offer.
The North Lincolnshire area (B Division) of Humberside Police piloted a six week scheme in 2008 to identify how many victims of crime wanted to see an officer after reporting a crime. Of the 666 people who report crimes, 468 (69.5 per cent) asked to see an officer for support and guidance including crime prevention advice and reassurance.
Previously a visit was only made by a police officer or PCSO if the crime fell into a priority category. If further investigation was not thought prudent, the victim would routinely receive a phone call explaining the situation, followed up by a letter offering advice.
It is hoped that a more personal service to victims of crime will assist in reassuring them of the police’s ongoing support.
Humberside Police Chief Inspector Dave Hall said delivery of the best possible quality of service to people reporting crime would begin with actually attending at the scene so victims could speak to an officer directly.
“I am delighted that over 460 victims of crime who required a visit have now received one, when before the initiative started they would have received none. The majority of these visits have occurred within 24 hours of making the initial report.
“I am keen to build on this success and would encourage the public to express their views on other ways that would improve our service.”
