Top pianist visits Grammar School

THE OLD Hall at the Grammar School rang out with music by Chopin, Bach, Prokofiev, Haydn and Beethoven as sixth form students performed in a piano masterclass from internationally renowned pianist, James Kirby.

The six accomplished students who took part found him to be a 'friendly and constructive' teacher who brought lots of ideas and who quickly recognised where advice would be helpful. His imagination, skill and insightful guidance transformed their playing.

In the morning session the AS-Level instrumentalists had the opportunity to complete their examination performances and the masterclass concluded with James Kirby delighting his audience by playing a short virtuoso piece by Listz.

In response to thanks offered by head of music Frances Thompson, James Kirby said in his 25 years as a professional musician, he had known one particularly gifted and truly committed musician, who was Frances Thompson, and he hoped the students and CGS realised how fortunate they were to have such a musician and that they would treasure her!
