schools close for teacher strike

STRIKE action by teachers means three schools in the Market Rasen area will close their doors to all or some pupils tomorrow, Thursday.

Caistor Yarborough Specialist Arts College confirmed they would be closed to pupils.

Headteacher Jeremy Newnham did not wish to comment on the closure, but on the school’s website it said the industrial action would make “a significant impact on our ability to deliver our service”.

Binbrook Primary School will also be closed to all pupils as all four teaching staff opted for strike action.

Meanwhile, at Market Rasen Primary School only some of the children will be affected by the strike.

Although unable to comment on the industrial action, headteacher Andrew Smith confirmed the school would be affected by partial closure.

“We are open to Swallows (R/1), Merlins (2) and Kites (5/6) but will be closed to everyone else.

“This means that we have six classes closed.”

The national strike has been called by members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL)

The teachers’ unions are campaigning against changes to their pensions, which they say will mean working for longer, paying more and then getting less when they retire.

Debbie Barnes, assistant director of children’s services, said: “It is the responsibility of individual schools to arrange and reorganise staffing in the case of strike action.

“Schools have been made aware of the council’s policy on industrial action and we are providing advice where necessary

“Some flexibility will be expected by the schools in order to provide continued education for as many pupils as they can.

“We expect schools to communicate with parents and carers as soon as possible where there is to be any disruption to their child’s education, so that families can make alternative arrangements.”
