CHILDREN at Legsby School are being shown the right track to develop their reading skills in a new school initiative.

Groups of children are being taken by train from Market Rasen to Lincoln to visit a bookshop, where they can buy a book – all funded by the school.

And the project is proving to be a real adventure for some of the children as it is the first time they have been on a train.

After catching the train from Market Rasen, the children walked to Waterstones, where staff give them a talk about the bookshop and read them a story.

Then, each child is allowed to choose a book buy.

“It’s good fun,” said four-year-old Kieran Smith, who liked buying the book best of all.

And for six-year-old Lee Barnes, both the train journey and the book buying were equally as good.

“Originally, the project was for Key Stage 1 children, but then we decided to extend it to the whole school,” said headteacher David Miskell.

“We are giving every child the opportunity to see how a bookshop works and to buy a book.

“We want to help the children develop their reading skills and further their love of reading.

“This project will also hopefully encourage the children to share books with their parents.”

Having now completed the Key Stage 1 visits, the older children will be making their journeys next term.

The children will be continuing their book-based work throughout the coming weeks.

And one of the forthcoming activities will be a visit to the local library to learn about borrowing books and the services on offer through the library service.
