Learning how to save energy

PUPILS from around the area have taken part in a pilot project looking at practical ways to save energy.

Only nine Lincolnshire schools were selected to take part in the trial and five of them are in our area – Caistor Yarborough Academy, Caistor Church of England and Methodist Primary, Grasby All Saints Primary, Nettleton Community Primary and Brocklesby Park Primary.

Three pupils from each school learned how to carry out a building energy audit, how to identify energy saving opportunities, and how to calculate carbon and financial savings.

Each school had to carry out an audit of their own buildings and put together an action plan of short and long-term actions such as switching off lights and fixing a window. And the schools had to take meter readings to measure the impact of the action taken.

The SCoRE – Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency – programme has been developed by the county council and the Carbon Trust to look at ways of reducing energy use in schools.

Executive member for children’s services Coun Patricia Bradwell said: “This is an excellent way to raise young people’s awareness of energy consumption. They can see for themselves the impact of keeping doors and windows closed for example, or turning off lights.

“The SCoRE programme aims to change behaviour long term, so that young people instinctively look for ways of conserving energy wherever they are, whether it’s at school, at home, or in other places they use like community centres.”

The scheme now looks set to be rolled out across the county.
