Netting planned for pigeon pests all along
THE ongoing fight to stop pigeons roosting on railway bridges in Market Rasen has taken another twist.
The Rasen Mail can reveal long term plans have been in place to put up netting on the town’s Chapel Street bridge as part of works to improve footpaths in the area.
West Lindsey District Council has been working on the project with Lincolnshire County Council and Network Rail – and we are told the netting will be put in place on February 27.
This comes just weeks after it came to light WLDC had given the go ahead to Network Rail to trial a repellent gel on the same bridge.
This gel will now be trialled on the Queen Street bridge and applied to the Waterloo Street bridge if it is successful.
People have battled for years to get something done about pigeons roosting under the bridges and leaving hundreds of unsightly droppings.
West Lindsey District council’s environmental protection team leader Lesley Beevers said: “As the original date for the Queen Street bridge had been set in advance of any date for the Chapel Street bridge, it appeared expedient to trial the product on all three bridges.
“The date of February 27 has however now been set for the netting of the Chapel Street bridge, as such these longer term plans will now go ahead.
“The full trial of the deterrent product at Queen Street will also go ahead. There is no cost to the local authorities in respect of either planned works.”
Lincolnshire County Council’s area highways manager Steve Wiles confirmed the council was working to improve the footpath around the Chapel Street railway bridge as part of a Tesco development planning condition. This includes a new footpath on the station side of the road.
He said: “The work recognises that the pigeon issue needs addressing and therefore Network Rail were approached to see if deterrent netting can be extended to both sides of this bridge only.”
