VIDEO: Gravity racers go down a storm

Waiting for Video...

THOUSANDS of spectators lined the streets of Belchford for the annual Belchford Downhill Gravity Race day.

Teams from all over the country descended on Belchford to tackle the 600 metre course, inlcuding groups from Scotland, North Wales and the South of England.

The fastest racer on the day was Shane Foreman of Team C12, who set a new course record with a time of 49.5 seconds.

The fastest team was LG Racing who beat C12 and Formula Gravity to the crown.

Cookie Doh! remained undefeated after taking the Fastest Sidecar and Sidecar Team trophies home.

Event organiser Dick Black said: “It was a great day’s racing with records being broke, and thankfully no bones.

“Teams came from as far afield as Paisly, Scotland, Stonehaven, Aberdeen, North Wales, Wiltshire, Hinkley and Salisbury to enjoy a days racing.

“Many teams camped over at the top of the hill and enjoyed a party on Saturday night.

“It couldn’t have happened without the great contribution of the helpers from in and around the village.”

Mark Ogilvie, another organiser, said it was an excellent weekend of racing.

Although not a competitor himself, he said he appreciates the nerve of those who choose to ride the course.

“There was an eight-year-old from Wales who went down the track with no fear, he looked as though he’d only just learned to ride a bike nevermind a gravity racer.”

He added: “There was a record turnout of around 3,000

“We also had a record number of teams competing, including eight gravity bikers.

“It was a really nice way to end the summer for the area with a fantastic local event.

“It was a wonderful day and the weather was nice for us too.”

Mark also explained that the Spirit of the Event award, won by Andy and Michelle of Centa Bavaria, was awarded for their help behind the scenes.

He also gave Peter ‘The King’ Pope an honourable mention.

“Peter wasn’t racing this year, but he was doing shed loads of organisational work.

“He spent a lot of time on the stop barrier at the bottom of the hill, just in case a team’s brakes didn’t work.”

Peter Thompson added: “It was a great success.

“It was fantastic to see more spectators and competitors than ever before.

“We also owe a big thanks to all our sponsors who helped out over the weekend.”
