Rasen is ready to ring in the Olympics

TO ring in the Olympic Games, a call is being made to residents in Rasen to sound their bells this Friday morning and take part in a national ceremony.

All The Bells will see thousands of people across the UK joining together at 8.12am this Friday, July 27, to ring in the first day of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

And in Market Rasen the Churches Working Together Group, which organised the town’s jubilee celebrations last month, is calling on people to come to the Market Place at 8am ready to ring in the Games at 8.12am.

Paul Hiley, from Market Rasen New Life Church, said he hoped to get 10 per cent of the town to take part in the three minute ceremony.

He said: “The ringing of bells has always traditionally been a call to prayers and a call to worship.

“After this three minutes all those who wish will join in a simple prayer, which will be a blessing for the nation and the Games, can do so.

“It couldn’t be in the evening as the opening ceremony is taking place, so this is a prelude to it.”

St Thomas’ Bell Ringers will be sounding the church bells as part of the ceremony and people are encouraged to turn up with whatever bell they have to hand.

If people cannot make it to the Market Place on Friday morning they are encouraged to ring a bell whereever they are for the three minutes.

Mr Hilley added: “Any bell, anywhere, anyone for three minutes.

“They don’t have to come to the Market Place, but I think it is quite exciting to have bells ringing out accross the country.

“You can ring anything, doorbells, bike bells, mobile phones, whatever you have.

“I hope this will be like a pop–up celebration to follow on from MR BIG’s recent pop–up market.”

The time 8.12am was picked as 70 years ago after the Battle of El Alamein in 1942, Winston Churchill ordered that all the bells of the country should be rung in celebration. This proved a turning point and no further battles were lost.
