Sporting aid for Jamie’s challenge

Paralympic hopeful Jamie Carter

PARALYMPIC hopeful Jamie Carter has been given a cash boost ahead of his first international competition.

The 17-year-old wheelchair athlete from Binbrook has received a SportsAid Award to help with ongoing training and competition costs this season.

“It was a bit of a shock when I got the letter,” said Jamie, “but I was really pleased to receive it.

“The money will really help big time with entry costs and accommodation, especially with going abroad this year.”

As a SportsAid athlete, Jamie sits alongside some of the most successful British athletes, such as Sir Steve Redgrave, Tanny Grey-Thompson and Rebecca Adlington.

He has also been accepted on to the Lincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme.

Last year, Jamie launched a fundraising campaign to buy his own custom-made racing wheelchair.

He achieved this with the generosity and help of the community as a whole, and his investment is now paying dividends.

Originally, Jamie was aiming for the 2016 Paralympics, but such were his achievements last year, there is a possibility he may be a contender for the 2012 GB team.

Jamie recorded A Standard times last season in both 400m and 200m for his class.

“The times haven’t been set for this year yet, but if I achieve A Standard again this year, I could be in with a chance of selection; that is my ultimate goal,” added Jamie.
