Sir Simon, world-famous Hainton photographer, passes away aged 63
WORLD-renowned photographer Sir Simon Marsden, whose home was in Hainton, has died at the age of 63.
Famous for his eerie black and white images of graveyards, ruins and haunted houses, Sir Simon’s work appealed to fans of the supernatural and serious art collectors alike.
Spending his childhood at Panton Hall and Louth’s Thorpe Hall, famous for tales of the ghost of the Green Lady, Sir Simon later spoke of the influence being brought up in a haunted house had on his work.
On his 21st birthday he received an old Leica camera from his father, a keen landscape photographer, and, as they say, the rest is history.
Sir Simon published several books of photographs including The Haunted Realm, Venice, City of Haunting Dreams, This Spectred Isle and Memento Mori.
He was also the subject of a documentary, The Twilight Hour, which was screened locally at the Collection museum in Lincoln in 2008.
The Marsden Archive is Sir Simon’s legacy and it is perhaps best summed up in his own words: “It is not my intention to try and convince you that ghosts exist, but rather to hopefully inspire you not to take everything around you at face value; to show that what we are conditioned to believe is ‘reality’ may not be quite all that it seems, if only we take the time to inquire.”
