Howsham play park is officially open

A NEW play park – five years in the making – was officially opened at the weekend.

Villagers at Howsham have been working hard since securing a 30-year lease on land behind the village hall in 2007 and now have a park to be proud of.

“Nearly everyone in the parish has helped in some way – from helping to install the fencing to simply buying a raffle ticket,” said village hall and park committee secretary Debbie Clark.

“With the children in the village going to so many different schools, it is important to have somewhere for them all to meet up and we have that now – a real centre for all the community to enjoy.”

The new park area has also helped to boost bookings for the village hall – especially with children’s parties, as they now have a safe outdoor area to play in.

The land has been divided into two – one half has a range of equipment to suit all ages and the other half has been left as a grassed area which can be used for games or as a car park.

In all, the whole project cost in the region of £50,000 to complete.

Two large grants were received – £25,000 from the Rural Target Fund and £10,000 for the National Lottery Awards for All programme – together with further funds from Cadney cum Howsham Parish Council, Caistor Lions and Brigg Lions.

A great deal of fundraising also had to be done – with everything from film nights to duck races – and a lot of volunteer hours committed to the project.

“We are all really pleased with how things have gone,” added Debbie.

“Whenever we needed something done we would put it in the village newsletter and people would always come forward to help.

“It hasn’t always been easy, but with lots of teamwork from all the committee – utilising everyone’s different talents and involving all the parish – we hope we have provided something everyone will enjoy playing in, and that people will look after for years to come.”
