MR BIG’s new plans to open second shop

MARKET Rasen’s Business Initiative Group is doubling its efforts to boost the town’s retail opportunities.

Having already secured number 27 Market Place - the former Halifax building - MR BIG is now looking to go green - greengrocery that is.

Saddened by the closure of Market Rasen Farm Shop, the BIG team is pulling out all the stops in an attempt to reinstate a quality, independent fruit and veg shop at number 14 Queen Street.

“As Lincolnshire supplies a huge amount of produce to the rest of the country, local people deserve a local alternative to big supermarket shopping,” said Darren Lince, Mr Big’s commercial director and owner of The Advocate Arms.

“Taking on a second shop is ambitious, but if we can do it quickly and do it well, we hope it will create a positive tipping point for the town, that sees us attracting other high quality independent retailers into the area.”

The group will now set about fitting the shop out and it is hoped the shop will be open well ahead of Christmas.

With two shops to fill now, MR BIG is still looking for retailers and entrepreneurs who would like to take that step up onto the high street.

“Tackling the high shop vacancy rates we have along the high street is a major focus of our plans, as it’s vital that when people come to town to shop, there is a good retail mix,” added Mr Lince.

In a bid to maximise the potential of the Portas Pilot funding, the group would also like to hear from anyone with a few hours a week to spare who would be interested in being involved as volunteers - this could be on the administration side or staffing the shops.

Meanwhile, MR BIG continues with its promise to put the market back in to Market Rasen by hosting markets on the first Saturday of the month..

Working with the town council, the next event will be the Food Fair market on Saturday, October 6.

The market place will be filled with locally sourced, artisan produce, giving a real taste of what the county has to offer.

Sponsored by Tastes of Lincolnshire, the event will also see a celebrity chef giving cookery demonstrations under the auction shed.

Other market dates to note will be November 3 and December 8, a week later than usual, which will be a Christmas market.
