Hollywood director gets a real Rush filming at Cadwell

THE CLOCK was turned back to the 1970s at Cadwell Park last week for the filming of a new Hollywood movie.

Director Ron Howard of Apollo 13 and Frost/Nixon fame was at the race track to film scenes for Rush.

Set in 1976 it tells the story of the Formula 1 rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt.

Seventies racing cars were brought onto the track for the filming with crowd extras dressed in clothes of the period.

Some scenes were filmed by a camera on the back of a car driving along the track while others were filmed from a helicopter flying overhead.

Artificial trees were put near the track to help with some shots.

A large inflatable structure was put up to house the vehicles in between takes.

Ron wrote on Twitter: “I like the feel of realism in Rush, real action shots, not so much CGI, looking forward to it.

“Cars were outrunning the helicopter! Important day of action went well.

“I went up in the helicopter. Tight track and very quick action. Got a little green but cool shots.

“Realistically intense action played out with a mix of precision drivers and owner-racers.”

Ron said the inflatable building was ‘vibrating with revs’ from the racing cars.

And he was impressed with his visit to the Wolds calling the countryside ‘amazing’.

Ron filmed at Snetterton racing circuit in Norfolk at the beginning of May before coming up to Lincolnshire.

In the movie Niki Lauda will be played by Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth, currently to be seen as Thor in The Avengers, is James Hunt.

Rush will be released in cinemas next year.
