A student has her head in the clouds after beating off fierce competition to get an interview for a job at the European Space Astronomy Centre.

Hannah Laurens, from Grasby, now has an anxious wait to find out if she has got her dream job - monitoring space weather systems at the European Space Agency’s astronomy centre in Madrid, Spain.

Hannah - who is studying physics, astrophysics and space science at Lancaster University - was selected from more than 2,000 applicants for a year-long graduate position at the space centre.

She travelled to the complex with her mum and had just 30 minutes to convince a panel that she was the best person for the job.

The 22-year-old said: “It was terrifying.

“It was the first interview I’ve ever done and the head of the space centre was there.

“It was really difficult.

“I tried my best but it was very technical.

“If I get the job it would be amazing, a dream come true

“It’s a stepping stone, a foot in the door.

“I’m really passionate about it.

“I’ve really wanted to work for the European Space Agency for a long time.

“The job just came up, I saw it on the internet and just applied.”

Hannah, who is a former pupil at Caistor Grammar School, is due to find out next month whether or not she has been successful - and is keeping busy until then.

She said: “I’ve got a lot of work on at university so that’s keeping me busy.”

Hannah added: “I’m trying hard not to think about it too much.”
