Catch Patrick Hawes in concert this week
Patrick Hawes
A world-renowned composer who has worked for Prince Charles has said he owes his success to De Aston School in Market Rasen.
Patrick Hawes is one of the country’s most popular composers - his music has been CD of the week on Classic FM, he has been nominated for a Classical Brit award and in 2009 was commissioned by the Prince of Wales to write the royal garden-inspired Highgrove Suite, which was premiered at Covent Garden in London on the Prince’s 60th birthday.
It is a little known fact that Mr Hawes was a boarding pupil at De Aston between 1970 and 1977 - and that he puts his success down to his “excellent” school.
Mr Hawes told the Rasen Mail: “When I got to Market Rasen I realised I was streets ahead of anyone musically.
“I’ve got De Aston to thank for everything.
“Everything I know started there. It certainly was an excellent school.
“And I just loved the town, the community feel of the town.”
Mr Hawes, who now lives in Norfolk, studied at Durham University before taking up music posts at schools in Berkshire and Surrey.
He left his job to make it on his owns as a composer and admits to having a “few dicey years on the breadline” before his debut album Blue in Blue, released in 2004, was voted into Classic FM’s hall of fame.
This was when Mr Hawes gained widespread public recognition.
