“We want some magic in our village” - that is the message from hardworking residents determined to transform their area.

Back in the summer of 2011 a small group of Keelby residents got together to start the Brightening Keelby Campaign.

Their aim was to improve the village and create a strong sense of community.

A year-and-a-half later, and the group has done exactly that - but it has no plans to stop there.

Brightening Keelby founder John Hodson said: “ The response we’ve had has given us such encouragement to carry on.

“We’re really pleased with the public’s reaction.

“I’ve had people coming up to me in the street saying ‘you’re doing well’.”

The group’s achievements so far include securing a Christmas tree for the village for the first time last winter, organising a well-received Diamond Jubilee celebration and transforming a patch of waste land next to the village Spar shop into a community garden.

The garden featured Jubilee and Olympic displays during the summer months and residents have turned it into a winter wonderland for Christmas .

John is pleased with the group’s progress but says he wants to organise more events and projects that involve the entire village.

“There are a lot of different groups - there’s the gardening cub, allotment society, twinning is very strong, but there aren’t a lot of ‘whole village’ projects, ” said John.

Brightening Keelby is full of many ideas for the area and is working towards achieving its goals.

One idea - which is in the very early stages - is to convert the old tennis court on the village green into a playing area.

Brightening Keelby is still looking for more volunteers to join them in their campaign. For more information call John Hodson on 07889 400927.
