Bountiful harvest from church

A bountiful harvest for the community food larder

THE SALVATION Army’s community larder has reaped a hefty harvest thanks to the generosity of local people.

The church of St Michael at Newton by Toft was one of those which decided this year’s harvest festival donation would go to the Salvation Army’s Market Rasen outreach centre, which provides food parcels for people in the town and surrounding area.

Divisional envoy Anne Chaplain, leader of the Salvation Army in Market Rasen, was surprised to find several carrier bags of food, including tins of soup, beans, sweetcorn, noodles and rice pudding, dropped off by church warden Irene Corrigan.

Irene said: ‘We were only too pleased to help the Salvation Army. The Rev Chris Harrington suggested we gave our harvest donation to the Salvation Army’s outreach centre and we thought that was a good idea.

“We normally collect fruit and vegetables for a local home for the elderly, but this time we thought it was worthwhile giving to the Salvation Army. We are a small congregation of around 15 who meet once a month, but we managed to gather quite a large amount of tinned food.”

St Mary’s Church at Walesby, Braemar Close and the town’s primary school are just some of the other organisations who have donated their harvest offerings.

Anne says the larder is used on a regular basis.

“We often get referrals from social services and children’s services for food parcels, but we also provide a basic food box for new residents at The Foyer in the town and work further afield supporting offenders newly released from prison.”

But it’s not just food the community larder provides.

“We also provide a blanket pair of shoes if that is required – in fact what ever we can do to help really and we never send anyone away with nothing,” added Anne.

Anyone who needs to make use of the community larder can call into the shop in John Street and speak to the manager, Sarah Steer, or Anne in complete confidence.

Any donations for the larder will also be gratefully received.
