ATHLETES and fun runners took to the streets of Brigg to raise more than £1,000 for this year’s Poppy Appeal.

The Brigg and District Royal British Legion 10k fun run and 10k military challenge saw 120 people taking part in the races, which began and finished in the town’s market place on Sunday, September 2.

And completing the course was no easy feat, as runners in the military challenge had to carry a 36lb backpack and wear sturdy boots.

Stuart Frost, chairman of Brigg and District Royal British Legion branch, said: “We have had a big turn-out. It is a great way to launch the Poppy Appeal locally. Our target was £1,000 and we are well over that already.”

Sending the runners on their way was Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson from Doncaster, who was severely disabled in Afghanistan in 2006.

He was accompanied by Brigg and District Royal British Legion branch standard bearer Paul Walker.
