Priceless treasures from Market Rasen’s history have been stolen from a display case in the town.

Priceless treasures from Market Rasen’s history have been stolen from a display case in the town.

Five items were taken from the collection on display in the West Lindsey office next to the Festival Hall sometime on February 21 or 22.

The display case is one of many around the town housing some items in the possession of the Rase Heritage Society.

Society Chairman Hazel Barnard is obviously upset by the theft, but says the items will be of no value to the person that took them.

“All the items are catalogued and the Roman coins are registered with the Portable Antiquity Scheme, so if any of them came up for sale, they will be identified as belonging to us,” she told the Mail.

“They are important to the history of the town, but have no real monetary value.

“We would ask whoever took the items to return them and if anyone sees them for sale to let us know.”

The items taken were:

Large coin, 293-296AD, PF Allectus Aug, Ship on back Virtus Aug, 1.5 cms across

Small coin, 370-400AD, Victory on bow of ship, House of Theodosius, Olive branch, spear, 1 cm across

Token stamped W+C 1668 Centre of front, Market Rasen round rim, His half peny in centre of back with William Chapman round rim

Plaque, T Brooke Maker, Market Rasen, Width 22.5cms, Height 8.5cms

Policeman’s truncheon, painted with royal coat of arms, 44 cms.

“I have met with police and they are dusting the display case in the hope of picking up some useful fingerprints,” added Mrs Barnard.

“The coins expert at The Collection has been notified and he is passing on the details to others.

“We have also contacted various coin dealers in a fairly wide range of here and they all appear to want to help.

“Details too have been left Rasen auctioneer Mike Perkins and a couple of other auction houses.”
