THERE was a big welcome to Market Rasen for the town’s new vicar this week in 1978.

The Rev Albert Searle-Barnes was formally instituted and inducted at a ceremony in St Thomas’s Church by the Right Rev Gerald Colin, Bishop of Grimsby, and the Archdeacon of Stow, the Ven David Scott.

A Holton le Moor man told the Mail of a strange occurrence while travelling home from Laceby one evening.

Geoff Fawcett said he saw a very bright green light coming down through the sky at great speed.

A little later, he saw an object in the sky, which at first he thought was a Vulcan plane, but there were too many lights on the underside.

This was the latest of a spate of UFO sightings in the Caistor and Wragby areas reported to the paper.

More than 200 cubs packed into Market Rasen racecourse for a camp organised by county commissioner Joyce Holgate.

l Market Rasen WRVS Good Companions Club celebrated their 30th anniversary with a tea party in the Festival Hall.

A special cake was cut by the club’s oldest members Mrs Gooding.

When Market Rasen Churchmen met the Churchboys on De Aston cricket field there was quite a spirit of generational rivalry.

The senior team managed a score of 131 in their 30 overs, but the lads scraped dangerously near, only 15 runs short of a win.
