Lots to do in yesterday’s Rasen

LOOKING back to 1959 this week, there seems to have been plenty of activities to keep people entertained.

Beginners classes were being offered at the Market Rasen School of Modern Ballroom Dancing, which opened this week 53 years ago.

Principal John A Basford was offering individual attention in the Waverley Hotel Ballroom for an admission price of 2/6.

Dancing was also on offer in the Corn Exchange, where The Keynotes were providing the “sweet music”.

At Walesby, a pancake race and indoor fete was to be held at the institute, while in Lissington a whist drive was scheduled and De Aston School rugby football club was holding a jumble sale at the school.

Market Rasen’s Town Hall Cinema was showing five films throughout the week, including Danny Kaye in Merry Andrew and Diana Dors in Tread Softly Stranger.

And if that wasn’t enough, there was also a performance of The Beggar’s Opera - “sung in English and acted in costume” - at Market Rasen Modern School by the Arts Council Opera Group.

On the sporting front, Osgodby’s football team were celebrating after their first win of the season.

With the score at 2-3 and just two minutes to go, the match report tells us John Bennett scored to equalise and then managed to cross in a “very good corner” for Billy Rands to head home.

Their opponents, Faldingworth, fared even worse in the match against South Kelsey, finishing 7 - 0 down.

Finally, a weenie creature caused havoc at a major timber firm.

The 60-foot crane and all saws at Messrs Holmes (Wragby) Ltd suddenly stopped in the middle of loading seven trucks.

The reason became clear, when the electrician went to the fuse box and discovered a mouse had managed to squeeze in for a bit of a nibble.
