Farewell to three local figures
Nostalgia 1966
MR REXFORD Kew, last of the old-time station masters, retired from the railway this week in 1966, after 47 years’ service.
His first job had been as a railway clerk at Firsby in 1919 and by the time of the Second World War had progressed to station master at Dogdyke.
He came to Rasen as station master from Blankney and Metheringham.
On his retirement, Mr Kew told the Mail both he and his wife had been very happy here and recounted many memories of his time with the railway.
Mr and Mrs Kew retired to a bungalow in Willingham Road, which looked out on to the racecourse.

l Another well-known figure was also retiring.
Mick Creasey was hanging up his postman’s uniform after 41 years – all but six months spent in Rasen.
He was awarded the Imperial Service Medal in 1962.
l A decision was made by Market Rasen’s council to accept, in principle, the town’s street lights should be kept on all night, rather than be extinguished at midnight.
l South Kelsey School held its sports day and for the first time a house cup was presented.
The winner was the red team with 101 points, who beat the blue team by just one point.
Individual champions were Terry Crosby for the juniors, and, in a tied first, R Taylor, S Parker and W Clark for the infants.
l Another person heading for pastures new was Methodist minister the Rev Leslie Salt.
Mr Salt spent two years at Middle Rasen, but when the number of ministers was reduced from four to three, he moved to Wesley Villas at Market Rasen.
He was now taking up a post in Cornwall’s St Austell Circuit.
l And finally, Caistor WI felt the long arm of the law.
They were given a tour of Grimsby police station as part of their July meeting.
The highlight was visiting the control centre and witnessing a live 999 call.
