Duck farm looked to the East

A LOCAL business was going quackers this week in 1978 after receiving a new order from the Orient.

Cherry Valley Farms won an order worth £200,000 to export British breeding ducks to Japan.

Having recently entertained a group of Russians at their Rothwell headquarters, the company was also hoping to break in to that market too.

Other news making the pages of the Rasen Mail this week 34 years ago:

l Members of St John Ambulance were mounting a clear-up after their Waterloo Street headquarters was broken into.

Hundreds of pounds worth of damage was caused after the intruder upturned chairs, tables and other equipment, as well as smashing crockery and throwing liquid all over the newly polished floor.

The damage – and the intruder himself – were discovered by St John member Jim Ryal.

l Members of Claxby WI celebrated their Diamond Anniversary.

President Mrs Barton welcomed the county chairman, Betty Harvey, VCO Mrs Ellis and two founder members, Mrs N Maultby and Mrs F Maultby, to the celebration meeting.

l Middle Rasen cricketers – pictured above – faced Market Rasen Schoolmasters in the first round of the Mail Cup – they lost (Masters 47-4; Middle 46-9.

In the picture are: back row – K Salmon, D Westman, P Westman, K McWeeney, J Sharp and P Dawson; front row – T Trevor, G Zealand, T Fussey, K McWeeney and J Friend.

And finally........

l There was great amusement at a furniture sale in Osgodby when a collection of women’s nightgowns were included in the sale.

There was some keen bidding for the gowns, which were apparently 80 years old or so, and made about £4 per pair.

The sale, it was reported, showed the continued demand for Victoriana.

A small number of Market Rasen Mails – over 100 years old – were also acquired for £4.
