There may be a new look to the Market Rasen Mail, but on this page we will continue to look into the past.

And this week we are heading back to the 1930s.

The first edition of the Market Rasen Mail back in 1932 gave a summary of the news from the previous year.

Here is just a glimpse of what was going on in the latter part of 1931.

At the annual Methodist sale of work in October, tribute was paid to the passing of the town’s vicar on the previous day.

The gross proceeds of the sale was £71, £15 more than the previous year.

The annual smoking concert in connection with the Working Men’s Club Angling Association was held, at which the Conway Cup was presented to the winner, Mr C Fridlington, by Dr Pank.

Ideal conditions prevailed at the October meeting of the Market Rasen Steeplechases, but only two favourites got first place in the six races.

In connection with Bishop’s week, a mission was conducted at the parish church by Canon C E Bolam and addresses given by the Bishop of Lincoln and the Bishop of Grantham.

As a result of the General Election, Lt Col A P Heneage (Conservative) was returned for the Louth Division, defeating the Liberal candidate, Mr Ramsay Muir, by a majority of 3,995 votes.

A group meeting of local Women’s Institutes was held in November and was addressed by Mr N Harris, the editor Home and Country, the national WI magazine.

After 33 years’ service with the Post Office, Mr H Willimore, a local postman, retired and was presented with a suitcase and other articles by his colleagues.

For the 11th annual poultry show and sale run by Messrs Mawer, Cooper and Burkitt, Mr Arnold Gray, of Saxilby, acted as judge and the cup for the best pen of five pure-bred pullets went to Mr D Machin of Usselby.

Mrs Downs again had charge of the Poppy sales for the town and district and this year the handsome sum of £150 6s 6d was raised.
