Bread strike hits Rasen leaving shoppers angry

Britain’s staple food was in short supply this week in 1978, with queues of shoppers waiting for deliveries a common sight on the streets of Market Rasen.

The town’s independent bakers – Starbucks and Cottinghams – were busy producing extra loaves as the national bread strike continued to hit shoppers.

But feelings in the town 
were running high, with the shop owners reporting a distinct lack of order and even abuse from their customers.

WORSHIPPERS attending the family service at Market Rasen Methodist Church were surprised to find a picket line of youngsters waiting to attract their attention.

The Sunday School goers wanted to draw attention to the grim realities of the world outside, where two thirds of the population is undernourished and has a short life expectancy.

CAISTOR’S housing would be increased if plans from Cherry Valley got the go-ahead.

The company had applied for permission to build a residential development on a 1.4 acre site in Kelsey Road.

ANEW music group gave its first performance at a meeting of the Over 60s Club.

The Ladies Timbral Group was the first of its kind in the immediate area and were loudly applauded at the end of their performance.

MEN and women were being sought to join the undermanned Market Rasen branch of the Royal Observer Corps.

Such was the seriousness of the manpower shortage, a special meeting was called with a direct aim of recruiting.

The town had had an ROC post for more than 35 years and it was reported their complement of 10 had recently been reduced to less than half.

MARKET Rasen Town footballers were sporting new warm up tops, thanks to some local sponsorship.

Jim Kelham made the presentation to the players on behalf of Market Rasen builders’ merchants F W Davies and Co.

NAG’S Head landlady Gwen Newcombe was pleased to see less of one of her regulars.

John Collins shed two and half stone taking part in a sponsored slim to raise £140 for the Round Table minibus fund.
