SPONSORED walks seemed to be the order of the day back in 1978.

Four such walks were reported this week 35 years ago.

Three of the events were at Wragby, where the youngsters were raising money for the Save the Children Fund.

The annual walk from Bardney to Wragby, a more competitive event, by employees of Wragby Plastics was raising money for the local senior citizens and there was also a walk organised by the town hall management committee.

Meanwhile, over at Caistor, walkers were raising money for the hospital.

l At Market Rasen, the town was in the grip of Feast Week – the annual event incorporating a trade exhibition alongside competitions and activities for all ages.

One of the highlights of the event was the crowning of the Miss Chamber of Trade – with Sally Holmes handing over her crown the following week to Christine Ginnelly.

l Two WRVS volunteers from Market Rasen were honoured for their long service.

Ivy Vickers was presented with her second bar at a county meeting.

Mrs Vickers had been a member of the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service for 39 years.

Lillian Grayson received her long service award for 15
years work.

l After a lot of hard local effort, Wragby fire station’s sports
and social club was formally opened.

County Chief Fire Officer, George Moore, is pictured, above left, pulling the first pint, with Wragby’s firemen looking on.

l Four of the area’s villages were to be part of a study by Shelter – the National Campaign for the Homeless.

The 1971 census had shown some 20 per cent of households in village areas had no inside toilet.

Lincolnshire had been chosen as it was the country’s most rural area.

The year-long study was to focus on Ludford, Binbrook, Hainton and Donington-on-Bain.
