Life in the Trenches for Yarborough Students
CAISTOR Yarborough School Year 9 students have been getting hands-on experience of life in the trenches, as part of their study of World War 1.
Funding, gained through Creative Partnerships, has enabled the students to lead and develop an area of the history curriculum.
The project's aim is to deepen students' knowledge, understanding and response to the issues behind the events of WW1.
The student centred approach has involved a committee of Year 9 students from the planning stage to choosing an area of enquiry, writing a job specification and interviewing a number of drama practitioners to be engaged with the programme. The enquiry used a drama creativity to help students.
The trench was the idea of the students and was constructed, under the supervision of history teacher Verity Myers, during the half term holiday.
Working with drama practitioner, Al Muir and the history team through role play and drama activities, the students had the opportunity to empathise what life might have been like for a soldier joining up and fighting in the trenches.
The project is due to end at Easter but and it is hoped the students will not only have gained a deeper understanding of trench warfare, but have developed a range of practical skills to aid learning across the curriculum.
Student India Grace Coulson said: "I thought the trench day was a really good idea and I learnt a lot about what WW1 trenches actually looked like and what it was like to be in them. I mostly enjoyed a trench game we played which I thought really got the point across about how close the enemy were and how you couldn't look over the trench or you'd be shot."
Lewis Page said it was fun and quite different to a normal school day.
"I learnt a lot about how it felt to be in a trench and how hard it would have been for real people in the trenches. It was a good day," he added.
The project has proved hugely popular with the students involved and it is hoped the school can become a 'Change' school to develop cross curricular learning.
Because this is such a unique resource, it is envisaged the trench can be used as a learning tool for local and regional schools and colleges. For further details please contact Sue Jardine, assistant head teacher on 01472 852383.
