Inspirational Brigg figure dies

An 'inspirational' figure in Brigg area drama has died at a care home in Manchester.

Joan Dodd was the driving force behind the Children's Theatre School that met on Saturdays in rooms in the Buttercross through the 1970s and 80s. She taught drama at Brigg Convent School and later at the Vale of Ancholme.

Her acclaimed productions through the Theatre School included 'Tin Pan Alley' and 'Peter Pan'.

Mrs Dodd was also a former lady captain of Elsham Golf Club and was the widow of Ted Dodd, former editor of the Lincolnshire Times.

She also had close links with the North Lincolnshire Music and Drama Festival Society, preparing hundreds of pupils for speech and drama entries.

Chairman of the Society Tom Glossop said: "Our committee were very saddened to hear that Joan had died.

"My earliest memories are of her coming into Brigg Youth Centre and practising her pupils for the Festival.

"She put so much time and energy into it."

A neighbour and friend was Brigg Town Councillor Penny Smith.

"Joan was truly inspirational and it was a joy to help her with her productions," she said.

"She was inspirational to so many young people, a legend in the theatre world of Brigg. She gave so many children a taste of being on stage."

Mrs Dodd's funeral took place at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
