Ex Grammar School student dies
ONE of Brigg Grammar School's most famous old boys has died.
The Right Rev Eric Waldram Kemp, priest, canon law expert and theologian, former Bishop of Chichester, died at the end of 2009, aged 94.
It was in his sixth form history lessons at the school that he first became interested in the Anglo-Catholic Oxford movement of the Victorian era.
Dr Kemp was Bishop of Chichester from 1974 to 2001 and as one of the leading Anglo-Catholics of his generation and for many years an influential figure in the church.
He went to Exeter College, Oxford and trained for ordination at St Stephen's House, Oxford and was ordained deacon in 1939 and priest in 1940. After serving as a curate in Hampshire he returned to Oxford, where he spent the next 30 years.
He was Dean of Worcester from 1969-74, prior to his elevation to the see of Chichester. He was also a Chaplain to the Queen from 1967 to 1969.
Dr Kemp was associated with a conservative Anglican viewpoint, opposing the ordination of women priests.
He had special concern for homeless people and those suffering with HIV and Aids.
After retirement Eric Kemp remained in Chichester and in 2006 published his autobiography 'Shy but not Retiring'.
In 1953 he was married to Patricia Kirk, a daughter of the Bishop of Oxford and is survived by his wife and their son and four daughters.
