Dog Poo a Priority!

THE nuisance of dog waste in public places was highlighted as one of the priorities for the Caistor Neighbourhood Policing Team at its last community panel meeting.

So the team is coming together with local partners and local youngsters in a bid to ensure dog owners act responsibly and 'clean it up!'

Caistor Beat Manager Pc Chris Bell has joined forces with West Lindsey Streetforce Warden Tim Fenton to raise public awareness. Together, they want to encourage dog owners to think of others, and to remind them that not cleaning up after their dog is an offence.

The Dogs (fouling of land) Act 1996 makes it an offence 'for any person responsible for a dog not to remove the faeces should it foul on any land to which the public have access'.

It is not a defence to claim ignorance of the dogs' actions or of the law, or to not have a suitable device to remove the faeces. Fixed penalty notices can be issued to offenders or a fine of up to 1,000 may be applied.

Mr Fenton is checking the condition and locations of dog waste bins and renewing old warning notices, and Pc Bell has devised a competition giving local primary school children the opportunity to design a few 'dog fouling' notices of their own.

The winners will have their designs printed and displayed around the community and prizes donated by West Lindsey District Council will be given out to winners and runners up.

The Policing Team and Streetforce will also be conducting patrols in all areas highlighted as having a problem and will be following up all reports made to them.

If anyone has a problem with dogs fouling in their area, or want to find out more about the children's competition and how to enter, they can contact the Caistor Policing team on 01472 851618 or email caistor.npt@lincs.pnn.police.uk.

Dog fouling can also be reported via an on-line form at www.west-lindsey.gov.uk.
