Crossed oars over river rights
THE increasing use of the River Ancholme for leisure – despite the problem of weed growth and litter – has led crossed oars.
Tony Pell of the Glanford and Scunthorpe Canoe Club and Mike Hookham of the Ancholme Rowing Club accepted there had been clashes between oarsmen and paddlers last April when canoeists came from all over the North of England for the Canoe Challenge on a Sunday when rowers were in training for the regatta season.
It was put down to conflicts of interest
Another issue was raised by Brigg Town Councillor Ben Nobbs about long pike rods being a hazard to ramblers and joggers on the footpath down river from Barnard Avenue.
Mike Storey of the Scunthorpe and District Angling Association said, “The club accepts people have the right to walk by. But there is a problem also caused by people letting dogs off leads on that part of the path.”North Lincolnshire Council, responsible for footpath maintenance, are to be told that the path is getting even narrower – which in part causes the problem.
Another 'handbags' incident was reported by the Glanford Boat Club representative after a boat deck had been showered with maggots from a fisherman at a nearby peg!
Mr Storey said the Angling Association can always be contacted and peg numbers reported in such incidents.
