Brigg's 3B's youth project is streets ahead
BRIGG and Barnetby's 3B's Street Project for young people has been singled out for £10,000 of funding which will keep it on the streets for another year.
The project has also been taking part in a film project for a DVD and a magazine to influence the way organisations and local authorities work with children and families throughout the country,
The 3Bs partnership delivers activities for teenagers in Barnetby on Wednesday night, Brigg on Thursdays and on rotation between Brigg, Barnetby and Broughton on Fridays.
3B’s Senior Street Leader Wayne Pigott, encourages all young people who live in the three parishes to come along.
“The activities are free and do not require any sporting skill or expertise. There is plenty of opportunity to try something new such as archery, rocketball, kite flying, four court volleyball and even bubble blowing. Or just sit around and chill out with your friends,” he said. “Just turn up and join in.”
It is one of only seven projects in the country to receive funding in Year 3 of the Children’s Workforce Development’s SHARE! Programme and the experiences will be used to influence the opinion and methods used by organisations and local authorities under the government’s Every Child Matters 2020 strategy.
Anita Adams, on behalf of Share! said the real life stories and innovations happening on the ground, such as 3B, are the real success of Share!
“We are delighted to profile the work of the 3B's project as a simple and hugely effective model that sees three areas coming together to really focus on outcomes for their children and young people."
Brigg Town Mayor James Truepenny is chairman of the 3B’s project. “Having been involved in the 3B’s project from the beginning and throughout the early days of consultation with young people within the three parishes, I am extremely proud to see it doing what we intended, ‘working out on the street with young people’.
The project started as a simple response to a community need. Young people identified that they didn’t always want to go to a youth club or formal activity whilst older members of the community identified their perception was one of ‘young people hanging around being up to no good’.
The solution - to be flexible and deliver activities out on the street where the young people meet in a situation that the older people can see is supervised.
Barnetby parish councillors Mick Wilson and Michela Littlewood-Prince, said the numbers of young people regularly involved in the 3B’s activities in the village was a clear testament to the need for such a project. “Even more so in a rural area such as Barnetby-le-Wold, where young people who are ready to enjoy a degree of independence can feel isolated during their teenage years, and be considered a nuisance by older members of the community. Hopefully, the project can be sustained for many years to come.”
Inspector Brett Rutty of the Brigg Neighbourhood Policing Team said this was the response to periods of anti-social behaviour in all three parishes.
“It is all too easy to just expect the police to deal with such matters when, in reality, they are very much a community issue that can affect everyone who lives there. We should all care about the well being of all young people in our community and the three Councils involved in 3B’s are to be congratulated for their proactive response.”
