Brigg litter resolution resolved

LITTER issues at the riverside in Brigg Town Centre could be improved for next summer.

Candy Read for the Environment Agency told the River Users Autumn meeting that a new management body was being put together to address the problems.

Mike Storey of the Scunthorpe and District Anglers Association said river bailiffs were collecting three plastic bagfuls a week of litter.

“Anglers have found this summer difficult. What fish that are in the river are around Brigg. The old river especially is silting up. Then there is weed growth which holds the silt.”

Ben Nobbs of Brigg Town Council added:

“The river could be a huge asset to Brigg’s summer tourism but at the moment it is a disaster. Duck week is a major problem in summer – as well as blanket weed, the problems being that rubbish just sits in it and cannot get away."

Keith Stothard of the Environment Agency acknowledged the issues brought to the table.

“It would cost million to restore the Ancholme through dredging. But we need to put funding together to go for it. Reeds are growing faster and also later in the year. The Environment Agency is concerned that there is no flow in the river.”

Other complaints came from Mike Hookham of the rowing club, and representatives of Glanford Boat Club.

Tony Pell of Glanford and Scunthorpe Canoe Club added:

“There is now a problem of week growth around the jetty by the leisure centre used by the canoe club. We have more members and more boats, but the jetty is getting infiltrated by weeds.”

Mr Stothard did have one reservation:

“Years ago we could just cut through everything. Now we have to leave it for wild life in some places. By our very name we cannot be seen to be tearing everything out of the river.”
