CAISTOR sailor Rachel Axcell entertained members of the town's WI and four visitors with tales of her time competing in this last year's Round the World Clipper Race.
Although there were 52 members on the crew list, there were only three or four female members at any one time. Everyone had to take their turn at cooking, baking four loaves every day. They did a month’s supply of shopping at a time for things that would store like rice, pasta and corned beef.

They had their own bunk but sometimes, if it was very rough, they could land on someone else’s!

They slept for only three or four hours at a time. They wore special clothing and boots, but it was difficult keeping the water out.

She said the wierdest thing was steering on a pitch black night with no lights except the small ones on the mast. Some of the main hazards were fog and icebergs, specially in Nova Scotia. She also spoke of the marine life - dolphins, whales and turtles.

A vote of thanks was given by Lynda Mason. Competitions for a nautical item and the Flower of the Month were both won by Jacqui Symonds, Lynda Mason and Catherine Shacklock.

The next meeting will be the Christmas social.
