BRIGG came fourth - out of four - in this year's In Bloom competition for North Lincolnshire.
The town scored 131 marks out of 150 in the first round of judging in the early summer but only 126 in the second round. An average score of 128.5 saw Brigg fourth behind Haxey, Messingham and Winterton in the Small Town section for town’s of 3,000-p
lus population.

With were Haxey, only 11 marks ahead of Brigg, town mayor Mike Campion said, “It was quite close.”

Judges said "Brigg has an extensive display of colourful floral displays and noteworthy hanging baskets,” but noted, “Displays at points of entry are lacking colour. There is a shortage of commnity planting in the town centre."

Positive points were the lack of graffiti, tidy bus stops and telephone kiosks, schools and the majority of shops and business premises were well presented. Pubs were complimented for having colourful flower displays and for looking welcoming.

The majority of hedges and grass verges were well trimmed and river banks were well maintained. Many gardens, baskets and planters presented colourful displays.

Criticism was directed at the maintenance of the main car parks where the surrounds were clearly in need of weeding. Most of the public seats were in need of attention which is something the town council is trying to address before next summer. There was a small amount of litter noted on the river bank.

Kirton Lindsey however came first in the large village group and Redbourne were winners in the small village section. Scawby was restricted to a group of seven past winners which Elsham won.
